Case Study - Walnut Spiral Staircase Installation

This month we undertook an exciting project in Llanelli, involving the installation of a new walnut spiral staircase. The project aimed to replace an existing poorly fitted spiral staircase, which was deemed too small for the room's size. The scope of work included removing the old staircase, widening the opening for the new one, reinforcing structural elements, addressing electrical wiring issues, and installing the new staircase with attention to detail and compliance with building regulations.

Carl beams with pride beside the completed project, showcasing his satisfaction.

Challenges Faced:

  1. Structural Problems: Upon removing the existing staircase, structural issues were uncovered, necessitating the reinforcement of the existing joists to ensure the stability and safety of the new staircase.

  2. Electrical Wiring: Exposed electrical wiring was discovered during the process, requiring collaboration with Osprey Engineering Limited to promptly resolve the issue with electrics, enabling the carpentry work to proceed smoothly.

Installation Process:

  1. Preparation: The first step involved removing the old staircase and widening the opening for the new one, ensuring compliance with building regulations.

  2. Structural Reinforcement: The existing joists were strengthened to support the new staircase securely.

  3. Electrical Resolution: Collaboration with Osprey Engineering Limited resolved any electrical issues, ensuring a safe environment for the installation process to continue.

  4. Staircase Assembly: Calculations were made to determine the appropriate spacing between steps, followed by the installation of the base plate and subsequent addition of steps, risers, threaded bar for support, and handles.

  5. Handrail Installation: Once the structural components were in place, the handrail installation commenced, including the fitting of metal bars and wooden handrails to secure the staircase opening.

  6. Finishing Touches: Softwood base rail, spindles, and newel posts were installed. The stairs' access area was clad with softwood pine to match the new wooden handrail. These components will now be handed over to the painter for a white paint finish, ensuring a clean and uniform appearance.

Completion and Client Satisfaction: Upon completion of the installation, thorough safety checks were conducted, and the area was cleaned. The client expressed high satisfaction with Carl's craftsmanship and attention to detail throughout the project. The successful completion of the walnut spiral staircase installation not only enhanced the aesthetic appeal of the space but also improved its functionality and safety.

With expertise and collaboration, we triumphantly concluded the installation of a walnut spiral staircase in Llanelli, overcoming structural and electrical obstacles. The project showcased our commitment to quality craftsmanship and customer satisfaction, resulting in a visually stunning and functional addition to the client's property.
